Manufacturing sales grow 2.6% in January

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s manufacturing sales grew 2.6% in January 2020 to RM118.2 billion compared to RM115.2 billion reported in the same month of the previous year, attributed to growth in petroleum, chemical, rubber and plastic products (6.9%), non-metallic mineral products, basic metal & fabricated metal products (4.7%) and electrical & electronics products (4.3%).

Month-on-month, the sales value went down 0.8% (RM0.9 billion).

Chief statistician Malaysia Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the number of employees engaged in the manufacturing sector in January 2020 was 2.28 million persons, an increase of 1.4% or 32,559 persons as compared to 2.24 million persons in January 2019.

For the month, salaries and wages paid amounted to RM7.66 billion, a 4.1% increase from the preceding year.

Simultaneously, the sales value per employee grew 1.2% to record RM51,831 as compared with the same month in 2019 and the average salaries & wages per employee stood at RM3,360 in January 2020.
