PETALING JAYA: Port Klang Authority (PKA) signed a joint declaration with 19 other international port authorities to keep their ports open to seaborne trade amid the restrictions and challenges caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Thedeclaration is a pledge by 20 members of the Port Authorities Roundtable (PAR) compromising of ports authorities from Asia, Europe, Middle East and North America.
With the declaration, the members of PAR will collaborate closely through the sharing of best practices as well as implementing measures to ensure ports remain open to trade.
Towards that end, the port authorities have pledged to ensure minimal disruption to shipping activities, so that the global supply chain and trade keeps moving, and that merchant ships can continue to berth at terminals to carry out cargo operations.
“[We will] facilitate closer coordination by establishing an open communication channel so that like-minded port and maritime authorities can share experiences/exchange information in combating Covid-19 while safeguarding unimpeded maritime trade,” it said in a statement.
In addition, PAR members have also pledged to continue to adopt best practices according to national circumstances, including precautionary measures for shipping community, advisories for shore personnel and ship crew, safe handling of cargoes and measures taken in dealing with Covid-19 cases.
PKA said the declaration was initiated by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, and was signed virtually by member ports across different geographical regions through a video conference.
The other port authorities that are signatory of the joint declaration are Abu Dhabi, Antwerp, Tokyo, Busan, Guangzhou, Hamburg, Singapore, Montreal, Ningbo, Bangkok, Barcelona, Yokohama, Kobe, Le Harve, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Rotterdam, Seattle and Shanghai.
