PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia’s industrial production index (IPI) grew 3.9% in June 2019 as compared with the same month of the previous year, driven by the increase in all indices of mining (4.6%), manufacturing (3.8%) and electricity (1.7%).
Chief Statistician Malaysia Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the manufacturing sector output rose 3.8% in June 2019 as compared to June 2018 after recording a growth of 4.2% in May 2019.
The major sub-sectors contributing to the increase in June 2019 were non-metallic mineral products, basic metal and fabricated metal products (4.8%), electrical and electronics products (3.5%) and petroleum, chemical, rubber and plastic products (3.0%).
The electricity sector output increased by 1.7% in June 2019 as compared to the same month of the previous year.
The output of mining sector showed a significant growth in three consecutive months since April 2019 and recorded 4.6% in June 2019 as compared to the same month of the previous year. The growth was contributed by the natural gas index (13.0%), while the crude oil index decreased by 3.7%.
The IPI of Malaysia for the second quarter 2019 recorded a growth of 3.9% as compared to the same period of the previous year, contributed by the growth in all indices of mining (3.3%), manufacturing (4.1%) and electricity (4.4%).
