
PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s manufacturing sales rose 5.3% year-on-year to RM70.6 billion in June 2019 against RM67.1 billion for the same month in the previous year.
According to the Statistics Department, sales grew by 1.3% on a month-on-month basis, an increase of RM900 million, while on a seasonally adjusted terms sales value value dipped by 0.6%
“The year-on-year growth registered in sales value in June 2019 was driven by the increase in non-metallic mineral products, basic metal & fabricated metal products (7.4%), petroleum, chemical, rubber & plastic products (5.5%) and electrical & electronics products (4.0%),” said chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin.
He said a total of 1.08 million persons was employed by the manufacturing sector in June 2019, a year-on-year increase of 1.1% from 1.07 million persons in June last year.
Salaries & wages paid amounted to RM3.98 billion, which rose by 3.1% or RM120.8 million in June 2019 against the same month of the preceding year.
“Simultaneously, the sales value per employee grew by 4.2% to RM65,266 as compared with the same month in 2018. Meanwhile, the average salaries & wages per employee was RM3,675 in June 2019,” he said.
For the quarter, manufacturing sales increased by 6.3% to RM210.3 billion in the second quarter of the year compared to 6.1% registered in the previous quarter, supported by the increase in transport equipment & other manufactures products (10.2%), non-metallic mineral products, basic metal & fabricated metal products (7.3%) and electrical and electronics products (5.7%).
Meanwhile, the number of employees as well as salaries and wages grew 1.1% and 3.9% respectively in the second quarter 2019.
