PETALING JAYA: Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) announced that the first of two units coal-fired plants owned and operated by its subsidiary Jimah East Power Sdn Bhd (JEP) has started operations, contributing an additional 1,000 megawatts (MW) to Peninsular Malaysia existing generation capacity of 22,748 MW.
In its press statement today, TNB said JEP is building two 1,000 MW ultra-supercritical coal-fired power plants in Port Dickson, Negri Sembilan.
The first power plant achieved its commercial operation date (COD) at midnight yesterday.
TNB said JEP second 1,000 MW coal-fired power plant is on track to commence commercial operation date in December this year.
It said the two plants are strategically located and are crucial in reinforcing the security of power supply to Peninsular Malaysia.
Apart from the two plants, TNB has two other super-efficient coal-fired power plants, namely Manjung 4 and Manjung 5 in Lumut, Perak.
TNB owns a 70% stake in JEP, while Mitsui & Co. Ltd and The Chugoku Electric Power Co. Ltd each hold 15% of the remaining stake.
